Game Breakdown
Saudi Arabia was good with the ball. They did well to defend the game till halftime but after that Mexico scored twice. Then KSA started to attack and they came close to scoring many times but the lack of quality in the final third didn’t let them. However, they did score in the stoppage time. Al Dawsari scored a good goal starting with great buildup.
Mexico started the game by taking early chances against Saudi Arabia. They were close to opening the scoring in the 7th minute when they force a save from Al Owais. But KSA didn’t let them dominate the game. After the halftime break, Martin broke the deadlock as he tap the ball in from close range. Mexico doubled the lead in the 52nd minute Luis Chavez. He doubled Mexico’s lead by scoring a wonderful freekick over the wall and away from Al Owais. That freekick also earned him the man of the match award.
Mexico attempted 26 shots out of which 11 were on target. It was a good win but it will not take them to the next stage of the world cup. Al Dawsari’s goal was the reason Poland went ahead of Mexico in the goal difference and qualified. They needed one goal to outscore Poland but couldn’t find the back of the net. This is how close Mexico was to the round of 16 qualifications.
