Uruguay 2- 0 Ghana – Both Teams Eliminated

Uruguay and Ghana competed again with each other in the world cup after that controversial match including the penalty save of Suarez with his hand in 2010. History repeated itself, Uruguay won the game, Ghana missed a penalty but this time Uruguay didn’t progress to the next round nor Ghana. Despite winning 2-0, Uruguay couldn’t progress as Koreans beat Portugal and went ahead on goal difference. It was an emotional farewell for Uruguay as this was the last world cup for their star striker duo Suarez and Cavani.

Ghana looked bizarre

Ghana started the game pretty well but they lacked the quality in the final third. Mohamed Kudus was not effective as he was in the previous games. In the 17th minute, they won a penalty. Andre Ayew had a chance to give Ghana the lead but he missed it. Then Uruguay scored twice. Then it was just about Uruguay. They attempted 10 shots out of which 4 were on target. Ghana did well to defend in the last minutes as Uruguay had to score a goal to qualify for the round of 16. South Korea must be happy with that performance. 

Attack by Uruguay

Uruguay is a defensive team they don’t press but look for counter-attacking options. Today it was a do-or-die situation so they went all the way to attack. They did concede a penalty but Ghana didn’t convert it into the lead. Then their MVP of today’s match Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored twice. The first goal was a rebound as Suarez’s low shot was saved, and the ball landed in his target area. Then just after 6 minutes, he scored again and it was a wonderful assist from the veteran striker Suarez. But then in the end they came to know about the stoppage time goal of South Korea and their dreams were shattered. The goalscorer Giorgian de Arrascaeta was the MVP today. He almost took Uruguay to the round of 16. 

The group H games are now finished. Uruguay and Ghana will go home. It was a good win for Uruguay but they will still be heading to home. This world cup was a disaster for them as they failed to win any game in the group stage but when they did they were still knocked out.
